The Local Rural Museum of Kato Drys

The museum is housed in a traditional building listed as an Ancient Monument, which was the home of Gabriel and Eleni Papachristoforou. Some time after their death, the heirs donated the house to the Department of Antiquities, which restored the building and turned it into a local museum, according to the terms of the donation.

The house is a typical example of the local architecture of the 19th century. The stone-built rooms open to the internal courtyard, where the oven is found. An arched passage at the end of the courtyard leads to the external gateway opening to the street. Although simple, it was a relatively large and rich house by the standards of its time, with five ground-floor rooms and a bedroom on the upper-floor.

The former owners belonged to a wealthy family of farmers. The choice of the exhibits and their arrangement in the various spaces, aimed at reproducing the image of a traditional village household, retaining the original use and function of the different rooms as much as possible. In this context, the main room, called dichoro, retained its original use as a sitting and dining room, reception room and working space at the same time.

The arch in the middle adds a touch of elegance to the room, which is simply furnished with a table and chairs, a sofa, the carved wooden chest where the trousseau was kept, a simple charcoal brazier for heating and the loom in a prominent place.

Behind the main room is the sospito, a windowless cool room used as a storing space for tools and as a cellar. The large earthen jars, where the wine and the olive oil were stored, remained in their original positions. Another small room adjacent to the dichoro, originally a storing place for hay, opens to the kitchen, with its original fireplace and an array of utensils related to the preparation of food and bread.

Finally, the bedroom on the upper floor was furnished in a more novel way than the rest of the rooms, with the brass bed, the carved closet, the sewing machine and a display of decorative painted plates on the souvantza, the gypsum shelf bearing an interesting decoration in relief.
