For the lovers of long walks along the beautiful seafront of the Larnaka bay a beach trail allows comfortable walking for several kilometers. It goes parallel to the sea for 5 kilometers along the eastern beaches of Larnaka towards Oroklini and Pyla. The trail is a permanent walking structure, which combines stone – cement - wood - pier construction, which was awarded an international architectural prize. The Larnaka sandy coast of the trail is rich in sea shells and colorful very small stones and the sunrise and sunset on this beach are magic. Stepping on this pedestrian trail can be made at any point along the Larnaka – Pyla tourist area.
South of the city center, this trail has two starting points. The first is at the Kamares Aqueduct on the exist of Larnaka towards Limassol and the second is at the salt collection plateau, on Artemis Avenue towards the airport, 150 meters after the building of the District Judicial Court. Besides the migratory birds and the interesting plant life of the area, at this site goddess Artemis-Diana and Aphrodite- Astarte were worshiped. A sanctuary, which does not survive, existed in this area and an elegant sculpture of Artemis - Diana was discovered a copy of which decorates the round – about on Artemis Avenue. The close connection of the area with these Greek, Semetic and Roman Goddess can be felt especially during the ultra-red sunsets you can enjoy walking the trail.
Starting from Europe Square you can safely walk along the city’s seafront pavements for 3 kilometers up to the Makenzy pedestrian trail and the airport fencing, or vice-versa. Along this walk you may enjoy the sandy promenade mingling with the sea, the historic buildings and the seafront traditional city quarters and modern hotels. If you prefer a shorter walk, the favorite walk of the locals is recommended. It starts at the Castle and finishes at the pier inside the Larnaka Marina, as many times as there is available time. This walk will never get you bored especially after sunset, because there are always lots of people doing the same walk, which is an old and deeply rooted social activity of all Larnakians.
A recommended walk for the adventurers is through the traditional city quarters between Saint Lazarus Church, the market place and the shopping area ending with a visit at the Pierides Museum or vise-versa.
The Pattichio Park is situated north of Artemis Avenue and its 2 kilometers pedestrian trail has become a very popular place for walking since the late 1980’s. The park is a natural habitat for some rare Cyprus plants and animal species. The stone walk goes around the Pattichio open air Amphitheatre and due to its lighting it is possible to use in the evenings too.
